Workshop 06: The APA Academic Essay -Synthesizing Research
Summary: In the class and also in research pairs, you focused on discussing your most current homework, but you also spoke and reflected on your past work on your issue, including the basics historical information, data, the causes, effects, and possible solutions or at least some relief to the situation. Afterward, you learned about strategies to synthesize your notes in one place as a template as an outline for your upcoming APA formatted paper. Synthesized notes are also known as a structure map in Alex videos or a graphic organizer.
“A kind of synthesis, but with some elements that perhaps you wouldn’t have expected in advance. I always like that when that happens, when something comes that is more than the sum of the parts.”~Evan Parker
Homework due on 10/19/2023 before class because you need some time to plan:
1. Please write your five or six questions related to your topic that you are researching and categorizing your notes on six articles on three A4 papers as shown in the sample images and the downloadable “Synthesizing Your Issue on 4 A4 Papers” PowerPoint above.
2. Then, use your research questions to categorize your notes into five or six sections in three pages of notes. The research questions become your paragraph topic thesis statements in your paper. Each section should have at least two citations and note the paragraph numbers and pages, especially your quoted material, so you can remember where you got the information from to make the paper easier to write with the necessary in-text citations.
2. Please include your references in the document APA style on the fourth page and type at the end of your current working Google Document you are using with your notes. Please provide the details of the author’s name, date published, the title, pages (if needed), and the publisher (or organization). We have already formatted many of your references in your photo notes in the A4 Word Google document, so refer to the edited format provided for your references and use that content.
Note: Your reference section should be in alphabetical order based on the author’s last name or the organization if there is no author.
2. An option to write a Write & Improve
Five improved essays are due by 11/20/2023. You can choose the essays and the time of writing freely, but write and improve on no more than one essay each week. You can get feedback and editing to improve your writing as much as you like and please improve the essay by rewriting it. Our goal for this class is the B2 level. However, if you get a C1, why not challenge to try to get a C2? Could you please do at least one entry on the essay topic you would like to write about in detail? Here is the convenient link:
