Session 03: Things That Block Creativity

Summary: We reviewed the Sawyer (2012) article, and mainly had active conversations about the myths and grains of truth associated with creativity. I also gave a mini-lecture about Sawyer (2012) and other creativity researcher's concepts in a PowerPoint slideshow.

Homework due via email before class on 05/13/2020. Earlier is better because I can check your writing before we have our Zoom Meeting:

1. Try to complete one or more entry of self-study in your Four-Skills Log. The entry should be one hour in length or longer, and please answer the questions thoroughly:

Which day, which practice task, and how long?  Reflections: What did you do? How long for? What did you notice? How did you feel? New speaking or listening goals?

2. Please watch the video, read the tapescript in English to help you, and then take 1 to 2 pages of notes in keywords only on this TED Talk Video by David Kelly:

Kelley, D. (2012, March). How to build your creative confidence [Video]. TED Conference. http://www.ted.com/talks/david_kelley_how_to_build_your_creative_confidence?language=en

Then, write about Kelly in your Note-taking Matrix in columns two (Kelly's (2012) work and three (your reflections about Kelly's video) about one page. It's "mendokusai," or bothersome, but could you use the attached file of the 2020 Creativity Reference List, cut and past Kelly's Ted Talk reference into the same document in column one that I gave you feedback on Saywer (2012). And type a lot of fresh and creative ideas while citing Kelly. Mistakes are okay, and I can help you because I am just staying at home.

These notes and matrix entry will help you in your class discussions on 05/13/2020. Please see your messages on Risyu for Class 03 if you would like a printed copy of David Kelly's amazing TedTalk.
